C.F. Monterrey officially announced the appointment of Matías Almeyda as the club’s new head coach ahead of the Apertura 2026 season.
The Argentine manager signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year based on results, tying him to Monterrey through the summer of 2028.
Almeyda arrives as the successor to Nicolás Sánchez following a disappointing Clausura 2026 campaign in which Rayados failed to qualify for the Liga MX playoffs after collecting only 18 points during the regular season.
The club hopes Almeyda can restore Monterrey’s competitive identity and guide one of the league’s most talented rosters back into championship contention.
The move marks Almeyda’s return to Mexican football after eight years away from Liga MX. He previously enjoyed tremendous success with C.D. Guadalajara, winning five major trophies including the Clausura 2017 Liga MX title and the 2018 Concacaf Champions League.
Following his time in Guadalajara, Almeyda coached San Jose Earthquakes in MLS and later AEK Athens F.C. in Greece, where he also captured domestic titles.
Most recently, he had a brief stint with Sevilla FC in Spain.
Monterrey officials believe Almeyda’s international experience and leadership style can help maximize the club’s ambitious sporting project.
