Cruz Azul completed a dramatic comeback to defeat Pumas UNAM 2-1 and capture the Liga MX Clausura 2026 championship at Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

The victory secured Cruz Azul’s 10th league title and delivered a redemption story centered around Rodolfo Rotondi, whose late winner sealed one of the club’s most emotional championships in recent history.

After a scoreless first leg, Pumas struck first in the return match thanks to a goal from Robert Morales in the 31st minute. The home side controlled stretches of the first half while veteran goalkeeper Keylor Navas made key saves to protect the lead.

Cruz Azul responded after halftime with increased pressure and eventually equalized through an own goal by defender Rubén Duarte in the 54th minute. The momentum shifted completely as Pumas began to struggle physically, especially after the injury exit of Adalberto Carrasquilla.

Late drama unfolded in stoppage time when Uriel Antuna was sent off, leaving Pumas down to 10 men. Moments later, Rotondi found a loose ball inside the box and fired past Navas to give Cruz Azul the decisive goal.

The championship marks a major milestone for Cruz Azul after years of rebuilding and inconsistency. The club now stands alone with its 10th league crown, reaffirming its place among the giants of Mexican football.

For Pumas, the defeat extends a title drought that now reaches 15 years.
