England officially unveiled its 26-player squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, and the announcement immediately ignited controversy across the football world.
Manager Thomas Tuchel made several bold decisions, leaving out some of the nation’s biggest stars from recent international campaigns. Among the most surprising omissions were Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, with Maguire publicly expressing disappointment after missing out on selection.
The squad reflects a significant shift in direction for the Three Lions. Rather than relying solely on star power, Tuchel emphasized chemistry, trust and collective balance as the foundation of his World Cup project.
England will still be led by established leaders including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, while experienced names such as Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson also earned spots in the final roster.
Several players were rewarded for outstanding club form throughout the season. Ivan Toney, Morgan Rogers, Kobbie Mainoo, Ezri Konsa and Nico O’Reilly emerged as some of the biggest beneficiaries of Tuchel’s selection process.
Unexpected inclusions such as Djed Spence, Jarell Quansah, Dan Burn and Noni Madueke added another layer of intrigue to the final squad.
Speaking after the announcement, Tuchel defended his choices and stressed the importance of building a united environment ahead of the tournament.
“International football is about chemistry. Teams win titles when there is trust and connection inside the group,” Tuchel explained.
England released the squad announcement through an official social media video featuring “Come Together” by The Beatles, including multiple visual references to the iconic Liverpool band. The video quickly gained traction online and became one of the day’s biggest football talking points.
England will compete in Group L at the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Croatia, Panama and Colombia.
