The clay courts of Roland Garros 2026 continue to host one of the most unbelievable and compelling storylines in the modern era of women's tennis. Opening the Wednesday quarterfinal matches, Poland's Maja Chwalinska sustained her miraculous run on Court Philippe-Chatrier by defeating Russia's Anna Kalinskaya, the 22nd seed, in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3. The victory propels the 24-year-old, currently ranked No. 114 in the WTA standings, into the Grand Slam semifinals after entering the tournament exclusively through the qualifying draw.

The encounter took place under difficult atmospheric conditions, characterized by cold temperatures and severe wind gusts that heavily disrupted baseline groundstrokes with the center court roof open. Chwalinska, utilizing her left-handed angles and a variety of spin mixtures, established an early 5-1 cushion in the opening set. However, Kalinskaya responded aggressively, breaking the Pole's serve twice consecutively to level the frame at 5-5. The structural parity forced a tiebreak where Chwalinska's composure held firm; a grueling 25-shot baseline rally handed her the tactical edge to claim the tiebreak 7-3 following a long unforced error from the Russian.

In the second set, the Polish underdog maintained command over baseline rallies, breaking Kalinskaya's fading serve twice to secure a 4-1 lead. Despite a minor stumble while serving for the match at 5-2, Chwalinska capitalised on the Muscovite's 47 total unforced errors to immediately break back and seal the definitive 6-3 scoreline after 1 hour and 53 minutes of play. With the victory, Chwalinska becomes the first qualifier to reach the Roland Garros semifinals since Argentina's Nadia Podoroska in 2020, and joins four-time champion Iga Swiatek as the only Polish women to achieve the feat in Paris during the Open Era.

"Honestly, I don't know what's going on. Every match here feels like absolute madness to me. I'm nervous and stressed, of course, but I just try to focus on my job and my game," an emotional Chwalinska stated post-match. The victory guarantees Chwalinska a prize money payout of 750,000 Euros (approximately $872,000) and an official debut inside the world's Top 30. In the semifinals on June 4, the tournament's revelation will face Russia’s Diana Shnaider.
