The Chicago Sky suffered their first loss of the season after falling 91-83 to the Phoenix Mercury, but Gabriela Jaquez once again provided one of the brightest storylines for the franchise.

The Mexican-American rookie continues to earn praise for her defensive intensity, basketball IQ and overall consistency during her early appearances in the WNBA.

While Phoenix executed better down the stretch to secure the win, Chicago remained competitive throughout much of the game thanks to its defensive energy and transition offense.

Jaquez’s steady development has quickly become a talking point among WNBA observers and fans, many of whom continue to highlight the maturity she has shown as a rookie coming out of UCLA.

Her growing role within Chicago’s rotation also reflects the confidence the coaching staff already has in her ability to contribute meaningful minutes at the professional level.

Although the Sky lost their unbeaten start, the overall outlook around the team remains optimistic, especially because of the emergence of young players like Jaquez.

Elsewhere around the league, the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun 101-94, the Washington Mystics edged the Indiana Fever 104-102 in a thriller, and the Los Angeles Sparks beat Toronto Tempo 99-95.

For Mexican basketball fans, Jaquez’s rise continues to be one of the most encouraging developments of the young WNBA season.
