Felix Rosenqvist delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in motorsports history by winning the 2026 Indianapolis 500 in the closest finish ever recorded at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Swedish driver surged past David Malukas on the final straightaway to win by just 0.0233 seconds after 200 chaotic laps filled with fuel strategy battles, crashes and constant lead changes.
The race featured a record-breaking 70 lead changes, surpassing the previous Indy500 record set in 2013. Multiple cautions, two red flags and a rain delay transformed the race into a tactical showdown where track position changed almost every lap.
Álex Palou appeared to be the strongest contender for most of the afternoon, leading more laps than any other driver while battling Alexander Rossi and Malukas at the front. However, alternate pit strategies from Meyer Shank Racing and Arrow McLaren, combined with late-race cautions, ultimately pushed the championship leader out of contention for the victory.
With eight laps remaining, Brazilian driver Caio Collet crashed into the wall, bringing out a red flag to ensure the race would not finish under caution. That set up a dramatic final restart and a one-lap sprint to the checkered flag.
Malukas briefly grabbed the lead entering the final corner, but Rosenqvist used the slipstream perfectly on the front stretch to steal the victory at the finish line. Scott McLaughlin completed the podium, narrowly ahead of Pato O’Ward.
O’Ward once again emerged as one of the strongest contenders at Indianapolis. The Arrow McLaren driver used an aggressive fuel strategy and briefly moved into the lead late in the race before the caution periods reshuffled the field.
For Rosenqvist, the victory marks the biggest win of his IndyCar career and only his second triumph in the series. The Swedish driver captured the iconic race in his 120th IndyCar start, giving Meyer Shank Racing one of the most memorable victories in recent Indy500 history.
