Club America Femenil's spectacular run of form has translated onto the international stage, placing them just one match away from continental immortality. Fresh off securing the Liga MX Femenil domestic title, the squad coached by Spain's Angel Villacampa delivered a massive statement victory, defeating NWSL powerhouse Gotham FC 4-1 at Estadio Hidalgo to seal a definitive ticket to the Gran Final of the Concacaf W Champions Cup.
The Aguilas did more than just dethrone the tournament's reigning champions; they claimed sweet revenge for the previous tournament where the American squad bounced them out in the semifinal round. The undisputed star of the match was Mexican winger Scarlett Camberos, who logged a magnificent hat-trick, perfectly supported by a brilliant creative display from Brazilian striker Geyse Ferreira, who notched three assists against her former teammates.
Villacampa's offensive game plan yielded early dividends. In the 20th minute, defender Chidinma Okeke provided a precise outlet pass finding Geyse on the right flank; the South American international powered past her marker and delivered a low cross into the box for Camberos to slot past keeper Ann-Katrin Berger for the 1-0 advantage at the break.
The second half started with a brief shock for the home side when Gotham's Esther Gonzalez caught the center-backs sleeping to net the 1-1 equalizer in the 47th minute. Refusing to panic, Villacampa executed a masterful triple substitution in the 55th minute, bringing on Karen Luna, Nancy Antonio, and Aylin Avilez. The tactical adjustment paid off immediately; in the 57th minute, the Geyse-Camberos connection linked up once again to break Gotham's defensive line, allowing Scarlett to reclaim the 2-1 lead.
From that moment on, the semifinal belonged entirely to America. In the 69th minute, Geyse created chaos on the right side once more, feeding a pass to the newly substituted Avilez, who calmly side-footed the ball home for the 3-1 cushion. In the dying minutes of the contest (87'), a frustrated Gotham defender Harper brought down a Mexican attacker inside the box, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty. In the 89th minute, Camberos stepped up to the spot and converted with composure to secure her hat-trick and the 4-1 final score.
With this triumph, the Aguilas keep their dreams of a historic domestic and international double alive. America will remain at Estadio Hidalgo to face the winner of the second semifinal matchup between Pachuca Femenil and Washington Spirit in the grand finale on Saturday, May 23.
