Club América delivered a performance of poise and elite character at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, securing a 2-0 victory over Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Leagues Cup. Under the tactical guidance of Guillermo Almada, the Eagles weathered intense periods of pressure, capitalized on clinical individual brilliance, and sealed a historic milestone confirming the absolute dominance of Liga MX, with all four semifinal spots now occupied exclusively by Mexican clubs.

From the opening whistle, América sought to assert control. In the 11th minute, a swift transition sparked by defensive recovery allowed Brian Rodríguez to drive forward and feed Raphael Veiga. The Brazilian midfielder unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from outside the box to break the deadlock, netting his latest crucial goal under the Almada system. Undeterred, Columbus Crew pressed forward, hitting the post and forcing the Mexican defense into frantic clearance work.

The turning point of the opening half arrived in the 39th minute when a handball inside the penalty area awarded Columbus a golden opportunity. Brais Méndez stepped up from the spot, but veteran goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota turned into a colossus, guessing correctly and palming the shot away in a monumental stop. Riding that massive wave of momentum, América struck a killer blow right before halftime in stoppage time (45+5'). Veiga returned the favor, setting up Brian Rodríguez, who cut inside from the left flank and slotted a precise low shot past the keeper to make it 2-0.

The second half evolved into a tactical chess match. Columbus pushed for a lifeline with attacking substitutions, but América’s backline and Cota’s sure-handed interventions neutralized any threat. With this victory, Brian Rodríguez notched his sixth direct goal involvement of the 2026 Leagues Cup and his 42nd career goal for América, extending his legacy as the club's top Uruguayan scorer. The Eagles now advance to face Monterrey in an all-Liga MX semifinal showdown.
