The final countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has entered a critical phase, exposing unexpected defensive vulnerabilities for tournament heavyweights. At the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, the France national team endured a disruptive 2-1 defeat against a highly disciplined Ivory Coast side. The international friendly, which featured a pre-match tribute to long-standing manager Didier Deschamps ahead of his final tournament with Les Bleus, ultimately turned into a tactical wake-up call regarding the efficiency of the hosts' second-string lineup.

France established complete technical dominance during the opening 45 minutes. Deploying a formidable attacking frontline led by Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, Marcus Thuram, and Rayan Cherki, the home side consistently unlocked the Ivorian low block. Mbappé tested the opposition early in the 6th minute with a powerful driving strike that was repelled by goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. The Ivory Coast threat was limited to a single counter-attacking opportunity, where Simon Adingra failed to convert a one-on-one chance against an alert Mike Maignan.

The continuous French pressure was rewarded in the 45th minute. Rayan Cherki executed a brilliant individual sequence at the edge of the penalty area, using a sharp change of direction to skip past two defenders before unleashing a precise low strike into the far corner to make it 1-0 at halftime.

The structural integrity of the match shifted completely following the interval. With a view to managing physical workloads prior to their Group I opening fixture against Cape Verde, Deschamps substituted key pillars including Mbappé, Olise, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Dayot Upamecano. These personnel changes stripped France of their structural fluidness and provided the visitors with room to operate.

In the 53rd minute, the Ivorian side orchestrated an incisive passing sequence, with Nicolas Pépé delivering an intelligent through-ball into the path of right-back Guéla Doué. The defender clinical slipped a low finish past Maignan to level the scoreline at 1-1. The equalizer carried a unique narrative, as the Ivorian goalscorer celebrated directly in front of his brother, Désiré Doué, who remained on the French bench.

Emboldened by the equalizer, Emerse Faé’s men pressed forward, exploiting the lack of cohesion in France's reconfigured midfield. The definitive breakthrough arrived in the 84th minute. Guéla Doué proved decisive once again, turning provider by delivering a precise low cross into the penalty area, where Amad Diallo timed his run perfectly to sweep home the match-winning goal. While the Ivory Coast departs for the Americas with massive tactical confidence ahead of their Group E battles against Germany, Ecuador, and Curaçao, France must quickly fix their internal errors before a final send-off match against Northern Ireland.
