Juan Manuel Cerundolo shocks Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros 2026 in stunning comeback

Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo rallied from two sets down to defeat World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and deliver one of the biggest shocks of Roland Garros 2026.

Juan Manuel Cerúndolo produced the biggest win of his career on Thursday, stunning World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a dramatic five-set comeback at Roland Garros 2026.

The Argentine battled back from two sets down to claim a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 victory on Court Philippe-Chatrier, reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

For more than two sets, Sinner looked untouchable. The Italian arrived in Paris riding a 30-match winning streak and carrying the momentum of titles in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome. Leading 6-3, 6-2, 5-2, he appeared moments away from another routine victory.

Under brutal Paris heat that climbed above 33 degrees Celsius, Sinner suddenly began struggling physically. His movement dropped dramatically, and Cerundolo sensed the opportunity immediately.

The Argentine raised his intensity from the baseline, forcing longer rallies and exposing the Italian’s physical limitations. Sinner received medical attention and briefly left the court, but never fully recovered.

Cerundolo dominated the final two sets with fearless tennis, taking control of the rallies while the World No. 1 searched desperately for energy.

The result ended Sinner’s incredible winning streak and instantly became one of the defining moments of Roland Garros 2026.

After the match, Cerundolo showed sympathy toward his opponent.

“I feel sorry for him. He deserved to win the match. I hope he recovers soon,” the Argentine said on court.

 

The victory also carried historic significance for Argentine tennis. Cerundolo became the first Argentine player to defeat a reigning World No. 1 since Juan Martín del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal at the 2018 US Open.

Now, the 24-year-old heads into the third round with momentum, confidence and the attention of the tennis world.
