Javier Aguirre confirms first Mexico squad cuts ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre confirmed six players will leave the national team camp as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico’s preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially entered a critical phase after head coach Javier Aguirre confirmed the first roster cuts following the team’s victory over Ghana.

Speaking after the match, Aguirre revealed that six players from the extended training group will leave the national team camp in the coming hours as the squad begins narrowing toward the final 26-man World Cup roster.

“Óscar García, Denzell García, Luis Rey, Eduardo Águila, Isaías Violante and Iker Fimbres will leave camp,” Aguirre explained during his post-match press conference. “We thanked them for their commitment and sacrifice.”

The players were part of the sparring group that helped support Mexico’s long training camp at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento as the coaching staff evaluated depth options and tactical alternatives ahead of the tournament.

The announcement also coincides with the gradual arrival of several Europe-based players who are expected to form the core of Mexico’s World Cup squad. Edson Álvarez, Orbelín Pineda, César Montes, Jorge Sánchez, Mateo Chávez and Guillermo Ochoa have already begun integrating into camp, while Johan Vásquez, Raúl Jiménez and Santiago Giménez are expected to join soon.

Aguirre admitted that difficult decisions still remain before finalizing the roster and emphasized that competition for places remains open.

“We are trying not to make mistakes and to be fair. The door is still open,” the Mexico manager stated.

Several high-profile names continue battling for spots on the final roster, including Álvaro Fidalgo, Alexis Vega, Obed Vargas, César Huerta and Gilberto Mora.

Mexico will continue its World Cup preparations with upcoming friendlies against Australia on May 30 and Serbia on June 4 before officially submitting its final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
