Court Philippe-Chatrier witnessed another display of flawless consistency from the tournament's modern benchmark. Four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the Roland Garros round of 16 by defeating fellow Polish compatriot Magda Linette 6-4, 6-4 on Friday. The third seed needed 85 minutes to assert her dominance and continue her perfect record of reaching the second week in Paris.
The match carried an intriguing backstory following their last meeting in Miami, where Linette’s upset victory prompted Swiatek to part ways with coach Wim Fissette and hire Francisco Roig. Linette threatened early on by breaking Swiatek to claim an initial 2-0 lead in the opening set. However, Swiatek quickly found her rhythm, breaking back immediately and unlocking the opening frame with a blistering forehand winner in the ninth game.
Swiatek carried that momentum into the second set, racing to a double-break lead. Although Linette showed great resilience by recovering one of the breaks in the sixth game and holding to love to put pressure on the favorite, Swiatek remained calm. The world No. 3 served out the remaining games with extreme composure to seal her 21st victory of the 2026 season.
With this triumph, Swiatek improves her remarkable lifetime record in Paris to 43-3, having won 29 of her last 30 matches on these courts. She also became the sixth woman in the Open Era to reach the round of 16 at Roland Garros in each of her first eight main-draw appearances, joining Chris Evert, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Serena Williams—and the first to do so since Seles.
Swiatek will now face 15th seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in the round of 16. Kostyuk, who defeated Viktorija Golubić earlier in the day, is currently on a 15-match winning streak on clay and has not lost a match on the surface since April.
