Gauff entered the tournament as one of the leading title contenders after an impressive start that saw her drop only nine games through her opening two matches. The American appeared on track for another deep run at the French Open, where she lifted the trophy a year ago.
The Austrian-born player matched Gauff's athleticism from the baseline and consistently challenged the world No. 4 in extended rallies. After dropping the opening set, Potapova raised her level significantly and gradually turned the match in her favor.
Gauff recovered from a slow start to capture the first set 6-4, using her defensive skills and court coverage to neutralize Potapova's aggressive approach. However, momentum shifted in the second set as Potapova earned multiple breaks and forced a tiebreak.
Once there, she dominated completely, winning seven of the first eight points to level the match.
The deciding set featured another twist as Gauff grabbed an early break and appeared ready to regain control. Yet Potapova remained composed under pressure, broke back, and continued attacking Gauff's serve.
The decisive moment came late in the third set when Potapova secured a crucial break that allowed her to close out one of the most significant victories of her career.
For Gauff, the defeat marks her earliest Roland Garros exit since 2020 and ends her hopes of defending the title she won in 2025. For Potapova, the result sends her into the Round of 16 and establishes her as one of the tournament's most dangerous remaining contenders.
She will next face Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the quarterfinals.
